Life in Oz!
We had to be at the jetty by 8:30 for a ride over to the boat for breakfast. Once everyone arrived and had had breakfast we took off for Whitehaven beach. Huge waves on the way again, bigger than yesterday. We had a 15-20 minute bush walk to the look out before we made our way to the beach. The view was absolutely beautiful!! It is definitely right up there with Lake McKenzie. It is a huge white sand beach with an amazing view, very hard to describe. We trekked it down to the beach were Isabell, Ulie and I had fun taking pictures. Greg and I put on our stinger suits and headed for the water to see what we could see. We saw a few fish at first but then saw some Rays! A few swam away as soon as we got close but one sat at the bottom for a good 5 minutes so we could look at him. it was pretty big, I would guess at least a foot across with the tail being just as long. Erin, Canadian, and Conrad, German, came over and took a look as well. We borrowed Erin's snorkel mask to get a better view. We weren't sure how much time we had left so went ashore but found out we had a good hour yet so we went straight back out into the water and Erin's sister came with as well. I took my underwater camera with so of course we didn't get close enough to anything to get a good look at it let alone take a picture. James told us to check out in the surf if we wanted to see really big Rays but it was hard to see through the waves and the sun disappeared behind some clouds which made it really hard to see the bottom. We were hoping to see a few small sharks come in to feed but weren't lucky enough. Small as in a foot or so long. It was then time to make the walk back to the boat. The shore on the other side of the island were the boat was, was littered with tons of dead coral on the shore which was fun to look at the different shapes. After lunch while sitting outside waiting to leave we saw a huge turtle come up for air a few times, so cool! Snorkel time! The waves were calm were we stopped to snorkel. We weren't actually in the Great Barrier Reef, I forgot what its called but it was a newer part of it but it is all in the marine park. Snorkelling was fun, still had trouble with my mask but not as much as last week. I can't really compare it to what I saw at the Fitzroy Reef Lagoon because it was very different. I saw more varieties of coral, some of it was very colourful but not a lot of it, more so as you got closer to shore but I didn't get that far. I saw bigger fish here, a big neon green and purple, a red fish, lots of little ones, but no Nemos, I was upset. I was the last one back to the boat again. I decided to swim back instead of get a ride in the boat, which was a pretty good workout. I didn't realize how far away I was from the boat and the current was pushing me diagonally away from it so I had a good current against me. It has been raining off and on all day. We headed back to Hook Island and then ate dinner and my group of friends had a great time playing card games, everyone else was being pretty dull and quiet. They made us go ashore about 9pm and on the way in we serenaded the captain with songs. A lot of us hung out at the bar area for a while but I was pretty tired and went to bed around 11pm.
