Thursday
Welcome to Yorkshire, where its raining, skies are grey, and the locals even greyer. I don't know why it is that people bother to work in the service industry if they can't smile or be pleasant. Perhaps it has something to do with the weather and the dark and at times, black stone buildings. It must be depressing, day in day out.
Anyway, the drive down from Scotland was very good, it not at times interesting. One circumnavigation of a roundabout, one premature exit from another roundabout that had us heading back up the M9 to Scotland, miles of very narrow country lanes and an unintended tour of Carlise, and we finally arrived.
We drove (yes I mean "we" even though I was behind the wheel all the way) through the Lake District. It was quite incredible, huge glacial valleys, very narrow roads no more than 2.5 metres wide, sharing this with on-coming traffic, hikers and wandering sheep made it all a memorable experience.
We arrived in Harrogate at around 7:30 checked in and went in search for something to eat. The choice was Tapas bars referred to as "grazing eating", must have something to do with all the sheep. Alternatively there were pubs with karaoke or flat screen TVs with sport or other general ear splitting noise. Anyway we found somewhere at around 8:30 which was lucky because the "happy" staff told us that she "thought that they we still serving" said in such a way that they we about to close.
So that was our introduction to Yorkshire.
Friday
Today was raining but undeterred we set out on a drive through the Yorkshire Dales. Once again the scenery was amazing. So green and the miles and miles of stone wall fences were something else, especially when you think how long they have been there. We stopped for a beer in a little pub in the middle of nowhere and had dinner in another country pub on the way back to Harrogate. The food was terrific and the place was like a step back in time, pretty much like the whole of Yorkshire.
Tomorrow, we are off to York which will be another adventure I am sure.
