Howellsey was up at the crack of dawn to hike to the Cape from our campsite. As it is a one way trail (shame!) I had a little lie in and went up to collect Ian at the cape. The Cape is where the Maori believe their ancestors leave for the afterlife and it is also the meeting point of the Tasman sea and the Pacific Ocean. There's a cool light house there and some amazing views. We did a short cliff top walk and then headed for the Te Paki sand dunes. These were like something from the Sahara. The sand was so soft and the dunes were massive. We thought we'd skip across them to glimpse the famous 90 mile beach but the walk was a heck of a lot longer than we had predicted! The scrambling down the side of the dunes on the way back made it worth it though! We continued south to Kaitaia for our first Kiwi pie time of the trip! The rest of the day was a very long drive south trying to get as many miles under our belts as possible as we are driving to New Plymouth tomorrow ahead of our first game (which is a good 800 kms from the Cape). With time running out till kick off of the opening game, we finally came across a campsite in a tiny town called Sandspit that was showing it. Let's stop here. Go Tonga!! :)
