Our next stop is in the most volcanicly active place in the country, and one of the most in the world. It is full of thermal pools and geysers, and there is a consuming smell of sulphur in the air - although I think it's also Dan using it as a cover up for his flatulence.
Today on the bus we headed to some gold mines, and saw the largest working one in the world. It was huge, but apparently will soon be depleted, so they will fill it in with water and make it a lake - economic!
We than travelled to Hobbiton - where the little gus lived in the movie. It was not that great. One of the conditions of filming there was that everything be removed after it was finished, so there are just some hills, and then some statues and signs saying where they were.
Not the Middle Earth I had hoped for!!
In preperation for our Maori feast tonight, we were introduced to the culture. They expplained a little about their history and we tried some food. This area still relies heavily on Maori tradiotion and tonight we embrace it - hopefully loinclths and all.
The adrenalin rush for today came from luging - riding down a hill on what is basically a steerable skateboard. You get up some crazy speeds, and could cause yourself some serious damage if you flew over the sheer drops that were there - but we didn't.
(Mainly because the first one I used didn't work. It wouldn't move forward so I crept down at a speed that even my Gran would have been dissapointed with!W I made up for it later though, maxing out the speed, crying all the way down. Not from fear though, just the cold!!!)
The hostel we are in tonight has a couple of geothermal pools that I think I might make some use of before we go all Maori.
Pools, spears, and loincloths.
This is a holiday!
