Our Kiwi Experience has officially started.
The big green bus picked us up this morning at half 7 and we made our way north of Auckland, to The Bay of Islands, the first area of New Zealand to have European settlers. It is a natural harbour, and contains loads and loads of small islands within it.
Once we had reached our destination, we unloaded and Dan and I decided to take a couple of kayaks out and do our own exploring. Many of you may be surprised by this due to the physical nature of kayaking, and Dan's usual attitude to any sort of strenous activity. I too was alarmed by his keeness, putting it down to over excitement, but made the most of it and we ventured out.
It was incredible. So quiet and still, and although the sun was not shining for us, it was nearly a perfect day. Stuck in the water, with nothing around but green islands and the occassional boat, the only sound was wind in your ears and the sporadic crys of a bird over head. This tranquilty was soon to be disturbed though.
By a hideous beast.
One that needs to be slain.
One I wish was extinct.
Lethargy. More to the point, Dan's lethargy. After an hour or so, and some pretty hard going into the wind, against the tide, he started to moan and complain, and when we eventually found a little bay to stop and have a cheeky beer, he complained about the cold too.
And the wet.
We were on kayaks in the sea so I trust you can see how irrational this was, but I just laughed at him, splashed him a bit, and carried on. No sympathy here!
But when we got back even he had to admit how nice the change was - away from the bustle of a big city, we could not have felt farther away from India now, a distant memory, albeit a good one. Things are just calm here; simple and nothing to worry about. Our trip has been taken from our hands and handed to the fun bus.
We are in their control - we are under their command.
Take us to your leader.
