"To be a strong man, you can't be afraid to eat and you can't be afraid to die," said Badri my friend from Kathmandu. Well, I wasn't afraid to eat after my 3 weeks of Dal Bhat. I gourged myself on any delicacy I could find, and for the first time in my life I actually have a belly. I was a little afraid of dying considering Kathmandu had weeks of Maoist protests in the leading up of my return. Thankfully, it was peaceful by the time I arrived in the city.
Oh, how I love Kathmandu. The markets, the people, the food, the excitement, the religious fervor, the spirit. There is no other city in the world, that I have visited, that has the great spirit to match Kathmandu.
The second day back in Kathmandu, Badri and his friends drove me on motorbike out to the country again. This time it was to pick berries. I thought, okay why not, let's pick berries. It was actually ended up being such a memorable experience. We picked berries in the trees for half an hour and then was led to this cabin nearby. Suddenly two guys started to play the tabla and harmonium, two Nepali instruments. What happened next was some of the most beautiful and tear jerking music I have ever heard. My heart was moved by the 2 men's singing. My friends later told me that the first songs were tradgedies. Then, the last 3 songs we upbeat folk songs and we all danced and skipped.
On the way back to the Kathmandu Valley Chang, Badri's friend said "My friend, today we found a diamond." Yes, we most certainly did Chang.
