Today is the 3rd day on our Beni to Dhorpatan trek and the further we go, the more we go back in time. Donkey caravans trot through the mountains, bells clanging, the herder is playing a flute to keep the animals moving, it's a magical sound. There is definitely move simplicity as we trek further along this route.
There are more smiles per capita in Nepal than home I have noticed. These people average $200 of income per year. Tonight we stay at the Roka Hotel in Dharapani. The woman who runs the hotel, which is just 4 beds in the attic, cooks us a feast of Dal Bhat - the quintisenssial Nepali meal consisting of Rice, Lentils and Potatoes. This one includes pumpkin. I can already tell this is a special trek because of the reaction we are getting from the locals. It seems like they se traveleres about one time a year.
In "The Snow Leopard" Peter Matthisen continually returns to the idea of attachment as a roadblock to enlightment and self-mastery. As long as I kep attaching myself to my thoughts, my experiences, my stories - I am stuck. I am still myself. Even the person who is Ryan isn't real. The only real is the infinite. The rest is not important enough to attach to. Love everything but attach to nothing. Love everything but attach to nothing.
