Singapore is like an Asian version of Miami. Old men in hawker stalls that moved from China to be in a place that's over 100 degrees, a humidity that's enough to kill you within minutes, wearing tropial clothes, relaxing with a beer and retired. Basically just substitute old Jewish men for old Chinese men and boom.. you have Singapore, Miami in Southeast Asia.
I love the ambience of the hawker stalls, basically the only place in Singapore with any form of atmosphere. You can trust me, I've walked everywhere in this city for 6 days, and it's Singa'bore! It's making me Singa'poor with the prices here.
The food is quite overrated, it's clean, too clean. It's sterile, like any boring American city. It's so hot, I sweat as soon as I leave the apartment and am walking around in my own moistness for the whole day. Singaporeans seem to not be in the moment, I'm not sure what this culture is chasing after. Money? With all the malls everywhere, that seems to be it. I've only had 3 people speak to me in he last 4 days. Feels quite strange after Indonesia. And why do they love McDonald's and Starbucks? McDonald's food is terrible, especially with all the good local options at their fingertips. Quite strange indeed. Singapore is a rush, rush, rush, but people are not really going anywhere. They don't seem too happy. Where can you go? Where can you go, that you not already are? Gotta have free time, that's so important.
1.) Love, of course, the most important thing.
2.) Time, so so valuable.
The creativity in this country seems quite buried. The energy seems stale too. I think the people here are just so busy, so they've lost the art of making true connections. The city overall is just not worth the money. In one way, it makes me grateful for the other parts of Asia, the more authentic Asia.
I guess it has it's positives - no trash ANYWHERE - no slums ANYWHERE. I've never been anywhere with no bad part of town. I've ben trying to find it, to find cheaper prices on something. There is cultural diversity, which is hard to find in Asia. It's not the kind of place that is going to change your life or way of thinking in any way. It is nice to have the comforts of home for a few days in the middle of a big journey like this.
