It's been almost two weeks that we have been in Costa Rica! We are having a wonderful time! We are all done orientation and we started classes on Tuesday. They are hard but fun for the most part. We have grammar class together twice in a row in the morning where we learn lots of vocabulary and conjugating. Next, we have separate phonetics classes. In this class, I feel like an infant talking babel. I just repeat over and over again syllables so that I can understand the sounds of the spanish vowels better. I'm sure we'll move on soon, it's just that in Spanish the vowels are more important where as in English we look at a word and notice the consonants first because they are more important for us. Next, we go to our separate language classes. Here we talk a lot. I had to give a little speech today in Spanish. I was so nervous. I had to introduce a famous family and tell all their ages and names and things about them. I chose La Presidenta de Costa Rica and her family so that I could learn more about Costa Rica. It went well I think.
So here's a typical day for us:
I wake up at 5:30 and Patrick wakes up at 6. We get ready for school and then have breakfast which is normally corn flakes and bananas but sometimes Mami makes us oatmeal or eggs. Then, we leave by 7:10. It's a ten minute walk to school and class starts at 7:30. We have all of our classes which are 50 minutes long with a break in between the first two classes and the last two. On Tuesday and Thursday we have chapel during the break. The other days we just have a break. Classes end at 12:05, we chat a little and then we go home for lunch. Our lunch and dinner are pretty much the same food. Mami will add to the dinner a little but mostly it's the same food for each. We eat a lot of rice, beans, and tortillas. There's a lot of vegetables in spaghetti which the sauce is very watery and not like sauce in the U.S. but it's still good. So, we eat lunch, rest a little, and study most of the afternoon. Patrick will take a little run in the afternoon rain. It rains everyday pretty much sometime between 1 and 4. All the roofs here are tin and the rain can be very loud. It can be so loud I can't hear people talk when they are standing next to me. Also, we take lots of walks to the store or to go play frisbee or something. It's good to take a little break. We eat dinner around 5:30 or 6 and then study some more or play on the computer. Then, we go to bed around 9. I know, sounds lame but after walking everywhere all day long, getting up early, and mentally exhausting yourself while trying to learn Spanish, you are tired at 9 o'clock!. Then the weekends are our time to explore! We find new places around the city, go to the market, and watch movies with friends. So that's are life for the most part here!
