Last week we had the whole week off for Spring Break! We were so blessed to be able to go to the beach and spend time with family! Saturday March 31st we got on a bus to go to Liberia which is a city in the north western providence of Costa Rica called Guanacaste. Guanacaste is one of the best areas for the beach in Costa Rica. The entire area is much different looking as well. I was suprised at how flat and everything was since I have spent all my time here in the mountains and rainforest. The temperatures there are also much hotter than here in San Jose as well. It was still a very beautiful area though! We met Patrick's Dad and stepmom at the airport in Liberia and then went to our lovely hotel and resort.
We had so much fun! The hotel had a wonderful pool and we spent a lot of time swimming and relaxing there. When you walked past the pool you were on the beach! The hotel had it's own beach so it wasn't very crowded. Red tide was in though for most of the week though so there were lots of dead fish on the beach and the water smelled like dead fish. The full moon on Tuesday night pulled most of the red tide back out. After that the beach was much nicer. We had never seen red tide before, only heard of it. It was interesting. The hotel also had amazing food! Every meal was buffet and there were so many choices! I ate way too much all the time! There were also special restaurants in the hotel. We ate italian one night, asian two nights, and steakhouse another night. My favorite was the asian restaurante where I ate so much sushi!
Bob and Terri booked lots of fun activities for us to do during the week. On Monday we rode horseback up a hill to spa where they had hot mud that you put on your skin as an exfoliant. Then we went down this awesome waterslide! Then we went ziplining! It was my first time on a full ziplining course and it was lots of fun! We went on eleven lines through the forest. That was a busy fun day!
Tuesday we got on a boat and sailed over to another beach where we snorkeled a bit. Then we sailed back as we watched the sunset! It was my first time on a boat with sails. That was really neat. It was a catamaran boat. We also saw lots of dolphins swimming past the boat. Despite me being a little motion sick in the beginning, we had a wonderful time!
Wednesday Bob and Patrick went scuba diving. They had a good time but they said they didn't get to see very much. We think the red tide really affected the water where they were.
Thursday we went on a boat ride down a river and saw lots of wildlife. The river had lots of crocodiles! The trees were also full of birds and monkeys. Our favorite was seeing the basilisk lizard. This is the Jesus Christ lizard that runs on water. It was something we both wanted to see before we came to Costa Rica.
Friday we relaxed and both had amazing massages on the beach! Then Saturday is was back on the bus and home for us. Bob and Terri left on Saturday as well. It was such a great week to relax and have a break. We are so very greatful for the time we had there! It was the best Spring Break ever!
