Yesterday evening we jumped on the 15 hour sleeper bus from Hanoi to Hue. The bus was fantastic, really comfy big seats with loads of space. The problem however is the roads. We spent the whole night bouncing between potholes, it was like trying to sleep on a trampoline with several people jumping around you! At points everyone even left their seats as we were thrown in to the air. For the price we paid however it's difficult to complain.
We arrived in Hue at just before 9 and found our hotel (Waterland Hotel), a lovely little place right in the centre of things with really helpful staff. A quick lie down and we went out to explore the city.
Hue is the old capital of Vietnam and where the Emperors used to live so there is a large complex known as the Imperial city where all there palaces used to be situated. However over time the palaces have crumbled, this wasn't helped by the fact the area was heavily bombed in the war as well, but some have been restored which are fascinating to walk around. One even contained the original thrown used by the emperors up until the early 1900's.
After a few hours exploring the ruins we returned to the hotel for another lie down.
Sarahs has a friend who visited Vietnam last year and made friends with a local girl who works at a English Language school. We contacted her (Mimi) and met her for dinner and a coffee and had a great time chatting about Vietnam and then best things to see and do.
Today we have just wandered around the city and walked along the perfume river. The weather is playing games with us though as it can't decide to rain or not so we retired to the hotel for a few hours to sort a few things out. Tonight we are just going to go for some dinner and then enjoy one of the happy hours at the numerous bars around the city.
Tomorrow we have planned a day tour to see a few temples, the old emperors tombs, some American bunkers from the war and a few pagodas.
We are planning to leave on Wednesday for our next stop, Hoi An!
