We are still alive we have just been really busy! On Tuesday we decided to do a motorcycle tour of the countryside around Hue and visit the various sites. 2 guys picked us up just after 10 and off we buzzed out of the city. My driver couldn't have been younger than 65 and spoke almost no English. Sarahs driver however was just over 50 and spoke good English so he was therefore the designated guide. The first stop on the tour was the Japanese bridge, a beautifully carved wooden bridge that an emperor that built in the early 1900's. It was then on to a temple and an emperors tomb before we stopped for lunch. After lunch we visited another emperors tomb, the site of several American bunkers that had been used when fighting the Viet Cong. The guide was really knowledgable and knew a lot of the history. Explaining to us how many people had been killed in the area and the type of fighting that had occurred there. The last stop on the your was called the elephant arena and it is a sort of collesium where on special occasions, crowds would watch a fight between a tiger and an elephant. We are still unsure as to who won the most be we have heard that the elephant usually won as they were considered royal.
We made it back to the hotel just before 2 and as we stepped through the door the heavens opened. Good timing! At 5pm we ventured to a big hostel around the corner where our Irish friends are staying and enjoyed happy hour. Mimi then met us again for dinner and took us to a fantastic local place where I think we sampled most of the menu for just over £3 each including beers. On the subject of money, the night before a group of 8 of us had gone out for some drinks, had 57 beers and a bit of food and the bill came to $21. Beer is so ridiculously cheap in Vietnam!
On Wednesday we headed to Hoi An which is where we are now. We are in a lovely hotel/backpackers with a big pool and large garden with a bar. The town famous for its tailors and every other shop sells dresses and suits. We are also only 3km from the beach so I hired a motorbike and drove down there while Sarah went on the back of our friend Andys who we had met in Laos. We have spent 3 of the last 4 days just lying in the sun and enjoying the warm sea.
Our other friends Jonathan and Victoria also passed through Hoi An while we were here so we've had some really great nights with friends we haven't seen for a month or so. Last night we all went to watch the Rugby which unfortunately England lost but the Irish lads were happy that they managed to beat South Africa.
Tomorrow we leave for Nha Trang, another 10 hour bus through the night. So wish us luck and we will post again when we get there!
