7th February 2007 - Day 313
Decided to arrange a tour of the Puerto Moreno Glacier tour - set off early on the Alternativo Glacier tour, which meant a walking tour of the glacier. The walk was really cool, we got really close to the water and could see the Glacier spreading out across the water, only one word for it really - amazing!!! After the walk, we went on a boat tour which took us even closer to the Glacier and we witnesses the melting and breaking off of the ice - which caused waves around the boat. Finally we walked even closer to the Glacier along wooden platforms.
8th February 2007 - Day 314
Caught the early bus from El Calafate (Argentina) to Puerto Natales (Chile). Had another two stamps in our passports. Stayed at a nice hostel ´casa teresa`. Booked the bus to Torres del Paine for tomorrow and hired some camping gear.
9th February 2007 - Day 315
Got up at 6:30 to catch the 7:00 bus to the park, which we thought would give us plenty of time to hike!! But didn´t arrive at the National Park until 11:30, so most of the morning had already gone. Our plan was to set up our camp and then head out to do the right hand side of the famous Torres del Paine 5 day´W´circuit and come back well before it got dark.
Set off up the mountain for the amazing views. After a hard 3 hr slog up the hills we stopped at the half way point for a breather and some salami and cheese sarnies. Another 2 hours further through the forest and then up a enormously rocky and steep climb to the famous Torres (Towers)- wow i must say the walking and sore feet were well worth the view - amazing !!!!! And we´ve got the pictures to prove it. After a short stop we had only 4 hours to walk back down and up to the camp site. Arrived back at camp just after 8:00pm and cooked up the finest vegetable soup with added salami for our dinner whilst sitting around a roaring fire.
10th February 2007 - Day 316
Caught the first of a series of transportation (including two buses and a catamaran) to left hand side of the ´W´ to walk to Lago Grey. This journey was a task in itself, naturally coming from a 1st world country you imagine that a bus from one side of the park would connect to the catamaran in order to get to the start of the walk relatively early but no, this is Chile nothing is as simple!!! We started our walk around 1:00pm which meant that we would only be able to do half the walk before the last catamaran left back to Pehoe to catch a bus back to our hostel in Puerto Natales.
The walk itself was fantastic but hard after the day of walking yesterday. We managed to get to the lookout point over the Lago Grey and witnessed the immense Glacier Grey. This really was spectacular even though we saw the Perito Mereno a couple of days ago, the glow of the vast ice field was out of this world and the enormous icebergs floating past us on the milky lake.
Arrived back in Puerto Natales at 10:30pm really tired and hungry - to be told off by the lady of the hostel for coming back so late!!
11th February 2007 - Day 317
Currently recovering from our two day hike around the Torres del Paine ´W´circuit, which was both breathtaking and leg-aching!!!
12th February 2007 - Day 318
Set off for a crazy bus ride up the continent; back into Argentina. Had to first catch a small local bus across the border to Rio Turbio. Then try and book a connecting ticket from Rio Turbio to Rio Gallegos, 5 hr bus, to catch another 18 hr bus to Puerto Madryn. Wow what a long boring two days.
