26th January 2007 - Day 301
Caught the bus from Valdivia to Castro, which is one of the main towns on the island of Chiloe (off the west coast of Chilean Patagonia). Managed to finish off a Jane Austen book called Persuasion im reading and couldnt put down, its fantastic and very romantic. We crossed from mainland Chile to the island of Chiloe on a small catamaran, the scenery was very beautiful. Arrived at Castro and booked ourselves into very nice homely hospedaje called casa miro really close to the waterfront. Decided to go for a stroll along the waterfront, taking in the peacefulness of the little town. There are lots of stilted houses overlooking the water - very picture perfect. Wandered around the various seafront stalls, where you can buy lots of crafts from pottery, ponchos and scarves to wooden carvings. Stopped for dinner at a restaurant overlooking the waterfront, i ordered Paila Marinas, seafood chowder a speciality in Chile. When the plate came it looked a little scary had lots of bright red pieces of fish with spiky horns, not too appetising. I eat most of it, sticking to the mussels and pieces of fish I could recognise, Paul was a little more adventurous and dug into the bright red horned pieces. I did try a small piece it tasted ok? Altogether the meal was nice and the view was pretty special.
27th January - Day 302
Headed to the church for a look around, ended up staying for a while as there was a service in progression. The church from outside was in need of some repair, made mostly from corrugated iron sheets, inside was other matter, lots of wood and beautiful stained glass windows. Caught the bus to the nearby town of Dalcahue, where we bought the biggest ice cream i´ve ever seen, three massive scoops of ice cream piled onto one single cone which cost us only 80 pence. Dalcahue is very similar to Castro, small fishing village with a waterfront and lots of crafty stalls along the water and islands.
28th January 2007 - Day 303
Set off from Castro back across to mainland Chile, to the town of Puerto Montt. Once we arrived were very disappointed to find the hostel "Hostal Sur" we had picked was really awful, especially as it is described by the bible (Lonely Planet) as clean, when it had damp patches on all of the walls and the place looked as though it should be torn down in my opinion.
