The landscape here is purely amazing, eternal ice on top of mountains reflected in calm huge lakes, surrounded by the very magical forest where the Lord of the Rings was filmed...Spetacular roads over mighty rivers..., At least that is what we have seen on the postcards at the tourist office, there is not much to admire when it rains like that. The only time my heart jumped is when Paul went too close too fast to the edge... hoi would you just slow down/I am within the speed limit/and so on... What a great driver, I do not know how he did this 4 hours of road between Fox glacier and Wanaka (I do not wanaka, I wanasun). Hang on, a bit of sun has just shown up, let me quickly take a picture...
The clouds were already on the war path as we left Hokitiki (now say this one three time quickly...) and its cosy camp site next to a grotto of glow worms (I think it is just the tourist office putting on fairylights for the tourists). The beautiful sea scenery was shrowded in romantic mist. We arrived in Fox glacier just soon enough to walk to the famous glacier, a huge block of blue blue ice slowly retreating towards the top of the mountain it spend two centuries descending, talk about patience.
We chilled at a little caffee surrounded by mountains. To Maxim and Callum's delight, the owner of the campsite lend them two mountain bikes which they used to zooom down the gravely driveway, to my horror (thought of ambulances flashing through my henmother mind). we met with Emilie, Olivier and Paul, from Reunion Island, going up as we are going down, (enjoy the rest of your trip and Australia!)
Today we left, virtually under or even in a cloud, which seems to have just lifted. We will go to Queenstown tomorrow. Time is starting to accelerate, only a week left, driving through the mountains back to Christchurch.
