14th July-
Last day topdeck sailing.
Was up earlish this morning to ensure that I was all packed and ready to leave as soon as possible. I have enjoyed the sailing and it has been so relaxing and peaceful but the no air con or fans had started to get to me a little. And it is just this harbour that due to the high volume of water traffic means the boat is moving a lot otherwise I have felt on board.
Dropped off the luggage at the hostel I am staying in tonight and sat inside as it was to early for anything to be open and I needed some time for my ears and body to adjust to land and not the movement of sailing. Walked out into the old city, came across the large statute of Marko Marulic ( it looks like a gaint wizard ) and explored the shops before going into the cathedral. It was original built as a Diocletians mausoleum but converted into a cathedral in the 7th century. The altar is inthe middle of the building which is a unquie feature I think and there are many small but detailed paintings through out the church. Went up stairs to a small treasury display. Then headed out to walk the bell tower. It is a large tower from the 12th century and climbing up the open metal staircase still suffering from the land sickness and then added vertigo due to the see through stairs it was a great achievement to reach the top. Once there though it was beautiful view out over the city and port. The walk down the stairs didn't seem as weird on my balance. Wondered around the old city then stopped at small bakery to try Soparnik, a local baked pies filled with wild greens and garlic... Very tasty. Contained to explore the local shops and narrow street before entering into the foundations of the palace. It is a cold and damp area under the city that you explore. It shows the large pillar and arch foundations that were created in order for Diocletians palace to site above sea level. They were built in around 300AD and are still used to support the city today. The advantage of visiting this in the middle of day is it is cool underground so gave me a chance to cool off before walking again. Stopped at the fruit and veggie market and brought some delicious fresh raspberries. Then back to the hostel for a rest as the afternoon is too hot and intense to be out.
Feeling very refreshed it was time for the beach. Walked to Bacvice beach and watched the locals play picigin. A game invented on this beach in 1908 as due to the very very shallow waters, water polo wasn't able to be played so they came up with something different. Waded into the water but it was so shallow and warm you couldn't really swim. Sat around in the beach and did some people watching before back to the hotel and shower. Dinner at fifi buffet but limited table room so joined some randoms and talked. Early to the hostel as tomorrow is a big day driving.
