Today was a double celebration as for us it is our 5th Anniversary and for Becki it means the arrival of Josh her boyfriend from Manchester University, who is joining us for the remaining 2 weeks.
We felt a bit sorry for Josh as he had been travelling on a night flight to Columbo via Mumbai and arrived at 5am. He then got a taxi all the way to Kandy some 40 hours after he had last slept. But he struggled on bravely until mid morning he just had to go and sleep and we didn't blame him one bit!
Later in the evening Becki & Josh went off on their own to explore the city.
We stayed back at our guest house and started on the rum first - just to get us going, then we walked the 100 yards to the Hill Top Hotel which we had checked out the day before when we were looking for somewhere nice to go for our anniversary.
Our meal was delicious. They had a large buffet style table laid out with all sorts of wonderful Sri Lankan dishes and we even pushed the boat out and had a bottle of wine.
There were musicians singing cheesy love songs at the table too. Perfect!
The next day we went off to explore Kandy. It is a large town in the middle of the island and is a tourist hot spot famous for its dancing. There is a large picturesque lake in the middle of the town and next o it, is the Temple of the Sacred Tooth.
Apparently when Buddha was cremated, a monk found one of his teeth in the ashes and had a temple built for it. The tooth has moved around a bit and now finally lies here to be worshipped by buddhists from all over Sri Lanka.
We all went to see the Dancing in the afternoon and it was ok but not sure why it is so famous if we are being honest. At the end of the dancing they brought on the climax of the evening - The Fire Walkers!
The lights went down, we were all urged to gather around the area in front of the stage as they lay down the fire walk. Everyone ooed and aahhed as the men walked over the fire.
Then they went to the door to gather their tips from us as we all left - leaving their firewalk behind.....
Josh was fairly tempted we could tell, to give it a go himself. He kept putting his foot over the coals, testing the heat. Then with just a tiny little bit of encouragement, he was off like a shot over those coals. There was a cheer from the crowd who had hung around to see if he would do it or not. Well done Josh!
Well of course - never to be outdone, Iron Bryan had to give it a go too. Hot in Josh's footsteps - quite literally - Bryan set off over the coals too. Wow he made it as well - hurray!
Our two firewalkers were the only ones to brave it out of the whole crowd. Well done both of you - stand and get your tips at the door!
We really liked this little town and our guesthouse - Pearl House felt more like a home stay. As we were leaving, the owners came to see us off and pick us some fresh avocados off their tree to send us on our way.
We would definitely go back there
