The forecasts were giving strong north easterly winds all week and that is the direction we were going in so there was no respite from head on. However a window appeared in a very small segment of the coast just where we wanted to go and this brief window gradually appeared in more forecasts; a study of actual winds last night showed some lessening and that was repeated again this morning on an early check.
We paid up and set off at 0910 this morning and motored off into a glassy sea in the lea of Poel Island, the two big industrial chimneys were billowing most of their smoke upwards a little before it was swept away. As we pressed on the breeze increased until out of the channel, some 16nm down route, we had a solid Force 4 NE and some seas of about 1.5m. However the boat was dipping her bow beneath some waves but by a large she was handling it all with aplomb carrying us forward at about 8kn. But we had about a knot of current, wind borne, against us.
Happily all was well and we were making good time as my weather window closed at 13:00 and we squeezed through the entrance of Kuhlungsborn at just after 13:10 with a solid Force 4 pushing us in.
This large modern marina is recently built out into the sea and has blocks of apartments and hotels behind with a gaggle of bars, restaurants and cafes along the waterfront. It is all spotlessly clean and well maintained, one presumes it was an East German resort for the achievers and after re-unification benefited from a massive influx of investment creating the modern tidy town we have viewed briefly this afternoon.
The warm early morning cooled and clouded over but this afternoon it all cleared to give a fine warm evening, sufficient for supper in the cockpit as the sun went down. Lovely!
30nm today in 4:10hrs, motoring all the way!
