We were very happy to meet up with my Uncle Carlo and Aunt Marilyn in the narrow streets close by the Spanish Steps. We exchanged greetings before ducking into a restaurant owned by Carlo's cousin. Pierre and I were introduced as 'Canadese' and were treated as family, which was amazing.. Very friendly and warm!
After a glass of wine, Carlo and Marilyn took us for a brief evening walking tour through the rain. They pointed out the Italian Parliament. The Pantheon: which Pierre will be returning to, to see inside. And Piazza Navona, a beautiful urban square crowned by the Fountain of the Four Rivers, which is very beautiful. On our return to the restaurant, Carlo pointed out the building where his own father owned a restaurant.
After our walk, we returned to the restaurant, where we sat down to the most amazing meal. We were served a number of incredible appetizers, including fried mushrooms, marinated salmon and anchovies, and bruschetta. The main course is spaghetti with a very tasty tomato bacon sauce, which was followed by veal in a sweet white wine sauce. Finally, for dessert we were served a light cream flaky cake.. Very tasty!
What was even better than the food was the company.. Carlo and Marilyn are great hosts and conversationalists, and it was very interesting to see them interact in Italian with Carlo's family. Pierre and I were welcomed with open arms, and had a fantastic night!
