After the partying at Airlie Beach I was not too excited about the 9 hour journey to somewhere I had never even heard of (Kroombit, a beef farm in the middle of no-where) but was well worth the journey. After stopping off at random places (all part of the oz experience package, including barefoot bowling with some pensioners on this leg) we finally pulled up, I am trying to think about how to describe this, as it was so cool, cowboys and kangaroos everywhere, the surroundings were stunning.
We were fed a really nice homemade meal of veggie soup and roast beef (can’t get much fresher, bring on a beef farm!) then this scary looking dude got out a whip and told us we were going to learn how to use it! So me and Katy spent a determined hour trying to learn how to crack this whip, giving ourselves a good beating in the process. After a few beers (ok we had coke) we had a go at the mechanical bull and we both fell off after two kicks (to be fair getting on was a hell of a lot harder).
The next day (after spending the night in a converted stable!) we went horse riding. I was actually quite scared (like always), as never done it before, unlike Katy who spent much of her childhood in stables. My horse was called Buttons and I asked her politely to be very nice and gentle with me. I was s*** scared when I got on her as I felt like I had nothing to hold onto and thought she might go galloping off but after about 5 minutes and some advice from pro Katy (who did go galloping off) I got into the rhythm of buttons and all was well. We just trotted around the aches of farm until we got to the goat farm and here we had to herd goats! My horse was very polite and would wait for everyone else to pass and kept stopping to eat! Typical!
After farmer Jen had herded all her goats we then all had a bit of fun at the goat rodeo! Basically in teams of three we had to grab a goat, turn it upside down and number it. We managed it in 27 seconds! Not bad! Lastly came some shooting which I love from back in my USA days! Love a bit of rifle shooting (reckon its cause it’s a sport where you stand still).
So after all that farming we started our 7 hour journey to Harvey Bay, which is the gateway to Fraser Island.
SO if your still reading I will tell you about Fraser Island. We had to get up at stupid’o clock to meet our groups as we were doing an 11 people self-drive 4WD of Fraser Island. We had 9 girls and 2 boys (1 of whom I wanted to punch the whole time). After getting some shopping we loaded up the cars (well Katy did on the top of the thing, I nearly had a heart attack watching) off we went! We arrived on the island, and when they said its the worlds biggest sand island I did not realise it would literally all be sand!! So a rather bumping 3 days was ahead but I loved it. Was a bit smoother (and a lot prettier driving along the beach). We drove to the first stop Lake Wabby (or Lake Wobbably as katy calls it) which was stunning!! Massive sand dunes. I was also brave enough to do a sand dune surf into the lake, in which I thought I was going to die! You go so fast! After that we headed to the Eli Creek for a walk in the crystal waters then it was Maheno Wreak that I have been looking forward to for years after seeing Kirstys postcard pics. I took thousands of photos! And I made Katy do a king of the world with me.
After a long day we went to Base Camp to set up tent and had a massive BBQ and some wine. We played stupid games then it was lights out at 10pm! Sleeping in the tent was really not that bad at all (except for smelly boys).
Day 2 we set off to Indian Head which is a huge lookout (more trekking, which I think I am getting better at). It was a stunning view and quite scary as VERY high! It was a mission getting there as well in the car as we kept getting stuck in the sand but I loved it. Next stop was Champagne heads where a little rock pool gets type of champagne bubbles from the ocean (well I didn’t feel any!!) but we just laid on the beach and explored a bit. Then it was back to camp for another massive meal which me and Katy cooked for the group (don’t worry, was not lasanga).
On the last day we had to get up according to the tide so we could drive on the beach and that meant 4.30am!!! deary me!! Was beautiful though, packing up the tent at sunrise. We then headed to Lake Boomanjin in which we treaked a bit of the junle (the only place in the world where rain forest grows on sand is Fraser) and we ended up just having lunch at 10am as we were all so hungry after a 5am breakfast! Then came the stop to end all stops when we went to Lake McKenzie which is just stunning! Pure white sand and crystal clear water (with no stingers or sharks so you can actually go swimming!). However I was so bloody knackered and in quite a bit of pain (got a horrible ear infection at the moment which feels like I have been punched in the side of me head – maybe katys starting to have enough of me and did it while I was sleeping) so I just passed out and slept for 3 solid hours. I know how to enjoy my surroundings.
After McKenzie we started to head back to the ferry when the clutch in the car decides to fail! Oh dear! So were pushing the car trying to get it started and it backed into a tree (don’t tell the hire company who didn’t seem to notice!!) and we thought we were going to get stuck there all night but we managed to get it started by keeping it in second all the way to the ferry, with the only way to stop was to stall it. Bit of a hairy moment really! Once back to Hervey we all went out for a massive chinse buffet (even katy went up twice, plain burger? What you talking about?). Now were getting geared up the rest of the east coast, were running out of money too so its spaghetti on toast tonight then its off to Noosa heads tomorrow. Time is flying!
