Since we last wrote a lot has happened!Well we have driven for hours and hours!
We were stuck at Rainbow beach (where we last wrote) for a couple of days as the rian got worse and worse! We were in the heart of the storm apparently and it got over 800mm of rain in 36 hours. It beat Oz records for August and the roads were floodedso we had to stay! We were told this is completely unseasonal too - think we brought th weather with us! The Fraiser Island trip was cancelled due to the weather and the island was shut. We went for a walk a long the beach after the rain and big chunks of the dunes were eroded and lots of debris on beach. However, you could still tell that the area is beautiful and we enjoyed that walk! the sky had cleared up a lot and the sun was out.
We drove up the coast as soon as we could to try to find sunshine that would stay! We found The Town of 1770 which is where Captain Cook landed in May of 1770 and is the birthplace of Queensland. It was out of the way just passed Bundaberg and is a beautiful place. Definitely recommend it, we have a campsite on the beach and saw some lovely sunsets. We sailed to Lady Musgrave Island (named after a governor's wife in 1880). We snorkelled and dived (much better experience!), there were lots of turtles, fish and coral. We used your camera Lisa - Ta! We also explored the island. It is a coral cay, which is undeveloped, it was like paradise.
We drove through Bundaberg and Rockhampton, which are just normal towns and carried on North. The area here is mainly sugar cane farms with not much else. The countryside is dramatic, with areas of flat African plain style and then huge mountain ranges in the distance. As we kept driving we couldn't find anywhere to sleep so stayed at a random rest stop. It was free and we were the only tent with a few campervans. It was a bit eerie and I didn't sleep well! But when we got up in the morning we found it was lovely conuntryside. We watched a lunar eclipse that night too. This was amazing - I set up my tripod and cmera and took photos which turned out and Neil used his binoculars too (Matt - they are being used!).
We're now at Airlie Beach, which is another lovely place, god views over the harbour with the Whitsundays in the distance. We are going on a sailing and diving trip tomorrow for 2 days and 2 nights. However, we had to settle on a catameran as I get seasick. Neil wanted to go on a traditional sailing ship, but he wouold have to put up with an ill me!!! So hopefully all will be well and we will have lovely weather and calm seas!
Next time we are on, we will uplaod some more pics, as this pc woon't let us!
