I could not visit Memphis without going to the Civil Rights Museum which is on the site of the Loraine motel and the Legacy Museum which is in the boarding house where James Earl Ray took aim and ended the life of Martin Luther King. The Civil Rights Museum has several exhibits weaving through the old motel ending with the rooms MLK and his associates were in the night MLK was killed. No one speaks but all slowly walk through with reverence and wondering what if? Just outside the window a wreath is hung where MLK was standing when the shot was fired. Across the street from the Loraine Motel is the Legacy Museum where you find yourself standing within feet of the dingy bathroom window where James Earl Ray laid in wait. Next door to the Legacy Museum is the fire station where FBI agents were monitoring MLK. I am grateful that these places are preserved and wish that we never forget the message that proactive peaceful actions can change the world.
