Spent the day sightseeing through Philly with my cousin ending with a picture in front of the Rocky statute outside the museum of modern art.
We went to the place where Betsy Ross made our first flag and consulted with George Washington on the design. I always picture Betsy Ross as an older woman but she was young and what she was doing would have been considered treason by the British carrying a penalty of death. Betsy was a head of her time training in upholstery and running her own business. Betsy was married three times becoming a widow twice as a young woman.
Elfreth's Alley includes residences built between 1720 and 1800 making it the nation's oldest residential street. The alley is very tiny and the homes are narrow. There is one room on each story with a winding staircase connecting the floors. This type of house is called a Trinity, and they abound in Philadelphia. The locals also called them Father, Son, and Holy Ghost houses. Part way down the block there is alley that leads back to a circular courtyard which is call Bladen's Court.
We went to Christ Church cemetery and paid our respects to Benjamin Franklin, may he rest in peace. People toss pennies on his grave and if it lands heads up it is considered good luck. I did not know this tradition but I am not sure I love the odds anyway.
Philadelphia is a great city and I wish I had allocated more time just for the city. There are so many museums, parks, great places to eat, neighborhoods to see and so many great leaders and artists to learn about. This is the city where my mom and dad grew up - this is their town and I wish I knew it better. The best part though was spending time with my cousin Marianne. Everything else was icing on the cake.
