The first leg of my trip I met a young man, probably twenties, from Alaska. He helped me with my luggage. I asked him where he was from and he told me he worked in engineering but was not quite an engineer. He told me his mom was a distinguished crab fisherman on the Bering Sea and that she was 48 when he was born. He was very animated and talked off and on seemed to really enjoy describing his life and clearly loved his mom and sister. He described the things they have done. His descriptions of what he had accomplished were not negative but did not contain the same respect and pride of those of his mom and sis. Why? I noticed his eyes seemed to get shinier and his voice a bit higher as the time went on. He was clearly getting drunk although I did not see him with a drink. He asked me for some food but I did not have any. I told him the café was still open and I would give him some money if he needed it. He said he had money but ran off to the café. I did not see him again until the end of the ride. He came running up to thank me for saving his life. He made it to the café before it closed. Not so sure that qualifies as saving someone's life. I wish I could have though, waved a wand and filled him with respect and pride for himself. He is a bright, smart, spirited young man but my instincts told me he is also a drunk.
