Our journey to Railay started very early in the morning, we were picked up outside our guesthouse around 6-6.30am by a mini-van. We had around a 45minute drive to the otherside of the island to Nathon Pier where we were getting a boat back to the mainland. The minivan driver pointed at the songserm office across the road when he dropped us off and said 'get your tickets over there'. Fair enough, easy and straight forward. Got our tickets and we had about a 30minute wait so we went into 7eleven (a convenience store which they have everywhere). As we were about to pay for our items a girl came in with a receipt for her boat ticket, showing this ticket to the staff behind the counter.... the staff laughed and said 'no, next door! ' The girl didn't seem to understand and shook her head and stormed out.... Me and Lucy were laughing our heads off! Did the girl really think she got her boat ticket from a convenience store and not the ticket office next door to it!!!???
We then boarded the boat and had a couple of hours in the sunshine. Then from the ferry port on mainland we had a 2-3 hour bus journey across to the Andaman coast of Thailand. We thought we were getting dropped off at Krabi town centre where we would then be able to get a longtail boat direct to Railay... Didn't work out like that! We were dropped at the (songserm) boat/bus companies station 3km out of town! Smart.... the only option then was to use there transportation either further. So we paid for a minivan and boat ticket to Railay with them. Turns out we went a complete different way to which the man said and didn't take that long. So on one hand it was good because we got there quicker, but on the other not so good, as he lied and we paid more than we think we should of done!
Anyways, we arrived on Railays east bay, and found some accomodation up the hill. Turned out to be the most we'd payed for a room on our trip yet. Railays quite an expensive place to stay, so we only spent two nights there. Railay Beach is a small peninsula located between the city of Krabi and Ao Nang in Thailand. Accessible only by boat due to the high limestone cliffs cutting off mainland access. These cliffs attract rock climbers from all over the world, but the area is also popular due to its beautiful beaches and quiet relaxing atmosphere. The four main areas of Railay consist of Pranang, West Railay, East Railay and Tonsai.
It was late afternoon so we just had a wander around east and west railay before eating at a bar and watching some football. The match was Liverpool v Man Utd.... we had a bet!! We both predicted the score, if either of us were right, the other could not eat any western food between 11am and midnight for the next 2 weeks until we got to Kuala Lumpur!! Only turns out Lucy predicted 2-1 Liverpool.... Peter was not happy!!
We arrived back at our bungalow that evening to find some sort of bird poo all over the bathroom floor! Our bathroom wasn't sealed of to outside (so basically things could fly and crawl in and out as they please, and even get into our roof)! We think a bird or two lived in our roof.
The following day we trekked over to Pranang beach (once voted in the top10 beaches in world). It was really nice, with limestone peaks coming up off the beach. We watched rock climbers for abit, there was some sort of shrine for penis's which was funny, sunbathed on the white sand and went swimming in the clear waters. Peter swam over to a little island and saw 3 jelly fish so quickly came back. A couple also washed up onto the beach. There were longtail boats lined up selling refreshments. As the day got hotter we went into the shade and watched the rock climbers. Lucy burnt herself while she went to get Peter a pancake and herself a corn on the cob.... stupid pancake took ages!!! On the way back we saw some monkeys. We also considered trekking to a viewpoint and lagoon... but we changed our mind when we so how steep it was and how dirty the people coming back were.
We then went to the same bar as the night before and had a couple of drinks while watching tennis. Lucy ordered some chicken strips which we'd had the night before.... they were amazing. Peter couldn't eat western food though could he..... Lucy was very mean tempting him with the chicken strips, putting them infront of him! After a while Peter gave in, he couldn't do it! tut tut....
It rained hard while we were in the bar so by the time it stopped we decided to stay out and get an early tea and have an early night. In the bathroom this night we were greeted with somekind of nuts on the floor!! Strange...
Next morning we were off to Kho Phi Phi
