So the long journey from Greenleaf Guesthouse to the lovely island of Ko Tao began.... Greenleaf kindly gave us a lift back to Pak Chong where we caught a local bus back to the city of Bangkok. Then a stupidly long taxi journey through the city (grumpy driver) to the train station. Unfortunately there were no seats left on the train we wanted so had to pay extra and have beds. We waited around the station stuffing our faces with doughnuts! After an 8 and a half hour train journey we reached the town of Chumphon. We had hoped to get there in time to catch a night ferry to Ko Tao.... we were cutting it fine! We were whisked away in a taxi (pick-up) and taken to the ferry port a few km's away. They had phoned the ferry to wait for us! We jumped straight on the ferry as it was basically pushing off!! We'd made it, Just!
The ferry was a very basic old thing, it had a dorm like area with bunk beds where everyone slept. Managed to get a few hours sleep on the boat, not bad considering how noisy and sweaty it was. We pulled into ko Tao harbour around 5.30am. Luckily they let everyone stay on the boat and relax. We waited for sunrise then decided to make our way. Not really knowing where we were going we set off walking up the coast, hopefully going to reach the Sairee beach area. We dropped our bags and had some breakfast at a cafe, while we took it in turns to go look for some accomodation... same story everytime - either full, too expensive or knowbody about to ask.... Luckily we finally found a room at a reasonable price :) so no sleeping on the beach required!
We had abit of a nap before heading down to the beach in the afternoon. Wasn't the worlds biggest beach but the water was the clearest either of us had ever seen before :-D...
That evening we treated ourselves to a lovely italian (abit above our price range but what the heck!) We then carried on the night at a bar playing a few games of pool before heading to a lady boy show!!! This time it actually was a lady boy show and not a pingpong show!! Some of the ladyboys were ridiculous.... so manly it was hilarious. The odd one you could hardly tell to be fair to them. It was a very funny evening watching them perform different songs and dances. Peter was very relieved when he didn't get pulled up onto the stage for a striptease.
The following day just involved more chilling at the beach and some cheap food at a local restaurant just up the road from our guesthouse.
We were a little more up and about the next morning, we went on a snorkelling trip around the island. We stopped at a few different points around the island, having around 30mins snorkelling at each site. The first site we stopped at was shark bay!! Considering we'd never snorkelled before, we just jumped in and went for it.... and loved it :-D. We didn't come across any sharks at shark bay.... BUT the next site we stopped was full of coral reefs.... and we did see some small sharks. They werent massive, but a sharks a shark!!! The waters around the island were soooo clear, we could see right to the bottom of the sea, lots and lots of colourful fish to be seen. They provided us with fruits and lunch. At one site we stopped at, we held little biscuits in our hand in the water, so many different fish came round us trying to get a bite of the biscuits. It was stunning and brilliant. The day finished by visiting an island just off Ko Tao called Koh Nang Yuan.... AMAZING... words can't describe this place. Basically 3 little islands linked by white sand, with turquoise waters round them. All in all a very fun day. That evening we ate at a little local restaurant called pud which was nice.
Unfortunately we left our clothes outside to dry overnight.... oops!! It chucked it down.
Our last day on Ko Tao consisted of eating at a duck restaurant, chilling down at the beach, having a couple of drinks watching footy and playing pool. The following morning we went and caught a boat to Ko Pha-gnan...
