After we dropped Sherbet off, we caught a bus then a train to Kings Cross in Sydney. Kings cross is situated around a 10 minute walk from the city centre. We found a hostel near the train station, called backpackers HQ. After settling into our new surroundings, we made some posters advertising the sale of our Lonely Planet and Camp6 books. We then distributed these posters into a few hostels in the nearby area.
We then had a walk down to the botanical where we saw lots of bats hanging upside down in the trees. Carrying on our walk to Mrs Macquaries point where we got a stunning view of the opera house and harbour bridge. Also Lucy saw a sign and said 'the statue of liberty of new south wales is this way'.... No Lucy, that says 'the state library of new south wales!' haha.
That night we didn't get much sleep as we had 3 snorers in our room, loud snorers too. After breakfast we went and found our friend Amelia at her work in the city. Here we chatted for around an hour while she was supposed to be working!
It was going dark around 5.30pm so we went to the botanical gardens to try get a view of the bats flying away. We waited and waited.... still they didn't move. Later we had to leave the park as the gates were getting locked... we came close to being in the park overnight! As we walked back to Kings Cross through the city, bats started appearing in the dark night sky. We found it abit spooky as the bats flew past the cathedrals lights. That evening we had a wrap making competition to see who could produce the best wrap.. Peter won apparently!! haha. After the Competition Lucy walked to the shop for a couple of beers, she bought peroni's paying on Peter's credit card.. after putting the pin in she got asked to sign.. sugar.. 'errm its not my card, it's my boyfriends' there response was.. 'ohhh it doesn't matter' The thing is about Australia anyone could steal your credit card and pay for things, sometimes they don't even ask for a pin or to sign. Easy!!
On the Saturday we met up with Amelia for dinner at a bar called Pontoon at Darling Harbour. Daring Harbour is the newest part of sydney and what a beautiful place it is. We sat talking for ages until it went dark, at about 7pm some fireworks started going off. It was amazing.
The day after we decided to walk the easternly beaches, we got the bus to coogee where we started the walk. It took us about 2 hours but the views were cracking. When reaching Bondi beach we eat fish and chips on the front, being pestered by seagulls... sounds abit like Blackpool eh.. but i can asure you it was a lot nicer. After making our way back to the city on the bus we did a spot of shopping for New Zealand.. picking up a couple of hats & gloves. That evening we didn't do much, i think we were both really tired.
Monday was a day to sort eveything out before New Zealand.. and some sorting out we had to do. First we popped out to sell our lonely planet and camps6 book but when returning to the hostel we got told our room mates had found bed bugs in their beds.. GREAT... time to check our beds, but didn't find anything. For the rest of the day we wrote blogs, did some washing and tried to get everything updated. Tea time arrived and we had bought a couple of Kangeroo steaks earlier that day.. can't come to Australia and not try a bit of kangaroo can you?? We really enjoyed them with some carrots and potatoes. An early night was in order because we had to get up at 4am for the airport.
The alarm went off at 4am, got ready and walked about 20 minutes to the train station at St James. It cost us a fortune to get to the airport even though we could have got there without paying, seen as nobody checked tickets. The time had come, we couldn't believe it.. bye bye Australia.. hello New Zealand ..
