This morning my train ride was really sweet! I slept for about and hour of the ride and enjoyed the view the rest of the time. The route to Venice was through all these small towns with mountains for a back drop. As soon as I arrived I got my "bus" ticket (which is all the boat system) and headed for my hostel. I met this girl Joanne our front while we waited for check in, shes from California and studies some IT stuff. We met back up after we dropped our bags off and headed into San Marco Sq. As soon as we got off the vaporetto we headed for the main strips but the streets were swamped with tourists! I did not think it would be this busy in September but if you could see this place it made total sense. Every building, street corner, store and kiosk was just filled with beauty! We started our journey and decided to get lost. About every 10 feet its near impossible not to stop in the shops and see these brilliant masks, glass, or other chach they sell. We were both surprised to find so many high end shops but it made total sense due to the foot traffic. We walked around for about 5 hours and most of what this city had to offer. At one point we found this world famous mask maker who made the masks for eyes wide shut and lots of other work. Even though of his fame and prestige he kept his mask prices pretty reasonable while some we saw were just off the map. On this tiny little side street we landed upon this chocolate shop that I could have sat in all day and gotten high off the fumes. They happened to have dairy free gellato, raspberry with dark chocolate shavings, I thought I was going to collapse it was so good. We headed back to the hostel, changed and headed back over to the island for dinner. We went to a chinese joint we saw earlier in the day (1. because she was chinese, 2. when have I ever refused asian food?) that was fantastic! After dinner we walked back to San Marco Sq. and caught the last 10 mins of this UNBELIEVABLE choir sining something in italian that made the perfect ending to an already perfect day. I am in LOVE with this place.
Venice Day 2,
This morning I was woken up by snorts and heavy breathing of the 3 fat dudes that surrounded my bunk bed. I got up and went down stairs to see what they had for breakfast which happened to be a white dinner roll and coffee so I opted for a cigarette instead. I found Joanne again and we headed over to town. They day was pretty tame, we had some lunch at this tiny little cafe on a side street that was owned and operated by a bull dyke. It was also the only gay friendly joint in town. We had pizza and a paninni for lunch that was pretty fantastic. After we got some gellato and headed over to the train station so I could reserve my seats for the train and make a phone call to my grandparents. I read an e-mail that Gram had a minor stroke, so I was freaking out all morning. When I called the house she answered the phone with her classic "hellooooooo Matt", I was instantly filled with joy and peace of mind knowing that she was alive and kicking a tear came to my eye. After I spoke with Gram and Papa, we walked around more, then came back to the hostel to rest before dinner. Dinner was fantastic again yet again. We took the long way back to absorb the last bit of Venice before we left. Joanne is headed to Milan next, and I am off to Sorrento.
