Mish and Liv's Travels
The Canadians stood us up but we went on the pub crawl anyway and ended up meeting some really cool people. We met a really nice couple who had just arrived from Laos and recommended lots of things for us to do whilst we are there. At first there was a bit of an english speaking and Spanish speaking divide but once the alcohol began to flow everyone started chatting and using large gestures to explain what they meant etc. The club was really good playing really good cheesy music (which as you all know we are big fans of).
Next morning we woke up feeling pretty jaded and our hangovers were made worse by having to lug our bagpacks over to our next hostel. However, our new hostel Milhouse is really cool and was definitely a good choice. Its not exactly an authentic Argentinian experience but its a great place to meet people and they organise loads of activities. We took part in a Tango lesson which was awesome. What better way to get to know a complete stranger than by wrapping your leg around each other! The man Mish was dancing with was very keen, there was no time for stopping and when the teacher asked for volunteers to demonstrate how much we had learnt he was always dragging her up to the centre of the floor!
During the next few days we have been walking all around the city-most people take taxis but after our experience we prefer to walk for a few hours (also means we deserve our steak in the evening). We went to San Telmo, which is the latin quarter and very cool. It has a really Cuban feel to it and made us reminisce of our trip there. Then we went to the port Puerto Madero which is really nice, lots of expensive bars and restaurants and its where all the investment is going in so there are lots of cranes building glass skyscrapers etc.
Yesterday day time we went and walked to La Boca which is the where all the first immigrants first moved to when they arrived in Argentina. The houses havent been rebuilt since so they are all quite dillapidated. We went and bought an ice cream from a shop and in broken Spanglish (english/spanish) we worked out that he was telling us not to walk any further as its dangerous and we would get mugged. We then read the Lonely Planet guide and it said that this was not the neighbourhood to go for a gentle stroll through which is exactly what we did oops! But to be honest it isnt dangerous as such, because the people are poor they will take your money but they would never hurt you (apparently). Its more of what the real Argentina is like so it was probably the most interesting neighbourhood we went to even though we only stayed there for half an hour.
We also went to Recoletta which is a beautiful district with lovely parks and restaurants. There is a cemetary there with the most amazing mausoleums- each time we found an amazing one and took a photo we found one that was even more elaborate so we ended up taking 100 photos of what are essentially graves- bit odd!
Last night we went to a tango show, there was a lesson included but as the tango experts we have now become Mish and I were the best in the class. Unfortunately unlike the lesson in our hostel there was a distinct lack of men to dance with so having drawn the short straw i.e. not wearing heels Mish can now dance both the male and female version of the tango. The show itself was amazing we took lots of photos but unfortunately they dont do justice to how amazing it was. Strictly come dancing eat your heart out. Liv got picked from the audience to dance with one of the male professionals which was quite an experience. The only bad point was that we were served our dinner whilst the show was taking place so couldnt see what we were eating and it was a bit distracting. After the show we went back to our hostel for a party and met up with the people sitting next to us at the show.
It was a great way to finish Buenos Aires and we are heading over to Mendoza which is the wine region tomorrow.
