We've been in Bariloche for three nights now and we both agree this has been our favourite place so far. It's an incredibly beautiful mountainous area with many vividly blue lakes. In the winter Bariloche is a ski resort so the town is littered with plenty of wooden ski chalets and most of the shops are located in chalet style buildings.
We have been staying in the Green House Hostel which is run by two brothers. It has been nice after travelling across Argentina so quickly to be able to spend four nights in one place. The two American girls (Leanne and Jamie) we have been sharing our room with are here for the same amount of time as us and we've gotten on really well. Leanne is currently living in Buenos Aires working for a hostelling website and Jamie is currently doing a computing Masters.
On our first full day in Bariloche we went for a long hike to view a waterfall by Lake Guitterez which was a really pleasant walk. On our way to the waterfall we saw three dogs and after giving them a little bit of attention they followed us for 10km all the way to the waterfalls and then to the lookout point which was located at the top of a very steep hill. Each of the dogs had their own personality and before we left them we gave them names. There was Arthur who was the big, slow wise dog who rarely left our side; Gus, who was the cheeky one (and Liv's favourite); and Cornelius who was very much an individual and ran around in a somewhat crazy manner. They definitely made the long trek to the top of the hill a lot more interesting.
That evening we decided to go out and experience some of Bariloche's nightlife with our room mates and two guys we had met at dinner (they were looking for some decent Engligh conversation). We went for some cocktails at South Bar and then headed to the big night out in Bariloche which happened to be a reggae night. Not really our type of music but we had a great night out. Our only complaint is the Argentinian men we came across in the club. We've never been so mauled and molested in our lives. They do not know how to take no for an answer and as soon as we got rid of one another guy simply took his place.
The next day we decided to take things easy and enjoy the hot weather and go sunbathing by the lake. Unfortunately Mish didnt realise exactly how strong the sun was and ended up completely sunburnt down her left side.
Today we got a cable car to one of the mountain peaks around the lake. Unfortunately the weather had changed and was incredibly windy and most people were were wearing thick jackets and fleeces. But not the two of us; vest tops and thin cardigans all the way. Despite the coldness we got an spectacular view of the many lakes around Bariloche.
Tomorrow morning we begin the two and a half day trip to El Calafate in southern Argentina.
