We have been staying in the Lagares Hostel in Mendoza. There are lots of English speakers and there is a really sociable atmosphere in the living area. We met a brother and sister from Canberra who were really nice. He kept going off to do rafting, paragliding and other extreme sports whereas she was quite happy to just walk around the town soaking in the atmosphere. We also met another Aussie called Nev who has been travelling for 19 months, which makes our 7 look pretty pitiful! He lived in Brazil for 5 months so has given us lots of advice.
The town itself is really pretty, it is much more laid back than BA. there are really pretty Plazas dotted around which were really nice to just sit and chat/eat lots of ice cream in.
Obviously as its the wine region it was compulsory for us to go on a tour of the different wineries and partake in some wine tasting. At first we were knocking back the free wine but by the 6th glass we had to take it a little slower! We also went to an olive oil factory where we got to try the different types with chunks of bread (yummy). We did a bike tour of the vinyards too which was good fun, except the steering was a bit dodgy on Mishs bike and the breaks didnt really work on Livs!
The highlight of Mendoza was paragliding over the Andes. We were both a little nervous especially when some guy in our hostel told us that people "often" break their legs on the landing! Anyway we drove up to the top of the mountain in a 4 x 4 and after waiting about 20 mins for the wind to pick up we both ran off a cliff with a piece of material to keep us up in the air. It was so exciting and the view was incredible. We had a view of Mendoza on one side and the Andes on the other.
We didnt go out partying for the two nights we were here as we both felt like we needed a rest after the hectic lifestlye of BA. But tomorrow we are heading down to Bariloche in the Lake District so we will have to check out some of the night clubs there.
