Great last night!
It was gone 2:30 by the time I set off from Pensilva on the road to St Austell.
I went over the last bit of Bodmin moor and joined the main road towards Truro. The way was quite busy and hilly but passed without incident. After about 15 miles my head had almost completely cleared following the previous evening's festivities.
As I was cresting a hill leaving Lostwithiel, my phone rang. It was one of my oldest friends, Tomtom. He asked where I was heading to that day and wondered if I would like him and another very old friend Ben to bring dinner and a campfire to wherever I was staying. My loud 'waaahooo' startled an old lady I was cycling past. Stoked!
We arranged that I would call a bit later when I knew roughly where I'd be staying that night. I cycled on past St Austell and then turned off the main road heading for St Mawes on the mouth of the river Fal. And so it was. I found a quiet grassy field out of sight of any farmhouses and gave the directions to the boys. I then spelled out my name on the road, using sticks, so they'd be able to find me.
At about 8, Tom and Ben arrived with a van load of wood and enough food for a family of Americans. Whilst I set up my tarp at the bottom of the field, the boys got busy making the fire and getting the food on. Spicy chicken wings to start followed by amazing chilli and chorizo sausages and peppered steaks all washed down with lashings of ginger beer (crabbies).
We spent a massively enjoyable evening chatting, reminiscing and laughing. At about midnight we all saw our first ever night rainbow (caused by very bright moon?) as well as a couple of shooting stars. The evening was rounded off by a 2am game of hide and seek in an adjacent field of barley. Ben kept cheating! I believe that you're never too old for a game of hide and seek. Slight apologies may be needed to be given to the farmer who might be confused by the deranged tracks we may have made through his field. A perfect last night to my trip.
Last night was the first night of heavy rain showers and there were a couple of moments when I thought I might get washed away. I made it to morning however, still dry, and lay in until about 10. (Tom and Ben had had to leave at 5ish to get back for the kids.)
I was on my bike for 11 and made my way along the country roads to st Mawes where I caught a boat over to Falmouth.
Slight bit of bad news: the windmill which I've had since the wedding in Bridgwater has been blown overboard. It had helped me up some steep hills and will be missed. I've still got the stick.
Currently, I'm sitting on the pier at Falmouth overlooking one of the deepest harbours in the world. After posting this I will be back on the bike for the final leg of my adventure. I'm going to take the back roads from Falmouth to Helston going through Constantine and Gweek.
Hopefully home in time for tea!
