So, during this whole homestay I have been working on an independent research project. This means I usually work on it in the mornings and return to town or the house in the afternoons (sometimes we have had class too). For my project I am asking whether there are differences in foraging time between small and large birds at a low-nutrient fruit tree and a high-nutrient fruit tree. There is this whole hypothesis that small birds will change their behavior by foraging for less time at low-nutrient fruit trees where there are more fruits and thus more predators. Therefore, I would expect to see small birds quickly flying into the treeing, grabbing the fruit and going to a nearby tree where the predator threat is less.Basically this project means that I get to be in the rainforest all morning bird watching.I have three sites 2 of which I walk about 45min-1.5hrs uphill to get to at 6-7 in the morning and the 3rd being the reserve which I take a bus too and only have to make the 30 minute walk to Canitas to return home. All the walking is great for me and this new schedule means I go to bed at about 8-9 at night and wake up at about 4:30-5, which is a great time to be up.I do get tired of it, but once I am in the woods it is spectacular. Each time I go to the reserve I see or hear the Resplendant Quetzal, which are tremendous.Look at my pictures to see some of the other birds I see. Also, at the reserve I get a special badge. It is sometimes nice to feel official, even though I really am not.
