Who have I been living with for the last month?
My family is an elderly couple, Nery & Victor Torres Rojas. They live on a large coffee plantation and also run a small lecheria with about 30 cows in Canitas (about 30 minutes from Santa Elena). Their coffee goes to a local coop, café Monteverde and their milk goes to the Monteverde cheese factory to be incorporated in their products.A little bit stays on the farm which means fresh milk, cheese and coffee all the time.Yumm (more of these yums to come)
Nery is a housewife and a good artist. She does the housewife things, like cooking, cleaning and laundry.Every day at 11:30 she watches her Novella (aka soap opera), Victoria. On my first day in the house and many others she bakes cakes. These are elaborate cakes, beautifully decorated with handmade roses and ruffles.Over the years it has informally become a business, so she is constantly baking cakes. Now, she is getting ready to make a large wedding cake. She also spends her time painting flowers, birds, etc. with acrylic paints on sheet-like material. She is very good. The third important thing she does is tend to her garden, which is full of roses, orchids and yummy veggies.I often see her watering when I return from town or putting together bouquets.
Victor is a character.During the day he works on the farm or runs into town to get supplies for the farm or home.Every third Thursday he goes to the bar with his sons and each night he watches Smallville dubbed in Spanish. He is indeed a jokester and is always making jokes with me.In fact, our relationship is based on jokes. He likes to bring in new things from the farm for me to try, of which I do and normally don't like them.He also like to catch bugs or animals for me to look at.He has great pride in his farm, which he has tended to for 45 years. It is truly beautiful. Both him and Nery could tell you every bird that has ever been on their land or where nests are typically made. They know the exact timing of when the coffee flowers bloom to when they become fruit. They truly are a wealth of knowledge.
Her 3 sons live on the land or across the street because they work on the farm, therefore their little kids are constantly over here and running around. They like to get into trouble, like aiming the sprinkler to the inside of the house, dribbling jello all over the floor, making a mud volcano in the washing machine…those sorts of things. They also have a daughter who lives on a farm in a nearby town called La Cruz. She is a fireball, as is her mother is too.The women in this town are always going.
On Sundays, the whole family goes to church and return to Nery and Victor's home.Sundays are all about family and everyone is there, talking or helping out in the garden or with food.It is a great thing to be a part of, a family that lives so close and is able to see and socialize with one another on regularity. They are very fortunate for such a beautiful thing.
