After a VERY cold night (we wouldn't recommend sleeping next to glaciers!), we woke to the sound of tapping in the bonet of our car, only to look up to see a kea bird running around on the car! However, rather than shooing it away, we encouraged it to stay so that we could take photos of it, hehe!
A bit of a hilly walking & skipping on rocks over rivers & we were greeted by a huge glacier. It was different to the Tasman Valley glacier that we had previously seen, as we could get a lot closer to this one & really appreciate the scale of it.
As we felt that we had not yet seen enough glaciers, we shot over to the more touristy 'Franz Josef' glacier. This was another large block of ice, which moves up to one metre every day! You wouldn't want to get in the way of that!
Once we had done these couple of short glacier walks, we decided that as the weather was so nice, that we would go on a walk down the 'truman tracks' to some natural caves. It was amazing sight to see such green, natural caves, it seemed as though we were in the middle of the rainforest or in LOTR! We stayed there for lunch, then walked back to the car & headed to Punataki.
Punataki has some amazing shaped rocks known as 'pancake rocks', as they look like stacked pancakes. We also walked down to the beach to watch the sea for a while, which looked quite rough.
As the sun started to set, we watched it fade into the sea whilst eating our sandwich dinner. Maz then got in a bit of driving practice around a car park before finding a rest stop to park up for the night.
