In the morning we continued our journey South. Passing by Lake Tekapo, we stopped to look at a church with the 'best view in the world'. It was positioned to overlook the length of the lake, with the Southern Alps for a backdrop. There was also a statue of a sheep dog to keep an eye on things.
Pressing on, we took a detour along Lake Pukaki, which had an amazing emerald blue/green colour to it. This road hugged the lake all the way up to the base of Mount Cook. There were a variety of walks that you could do to look at glaciers, but the weather was starting to turn bad. Therefore, we decided to go for a short walk to the Tasman glacier before the weather got even worse.
The glacier was amazing to see, as it was the first time we had seen one! Even though it has been retreating for years, it was still an impressive sight. Due to global warming, etc, these splendors will not last much longer, so if you haven't seen one.... go NOW!!!
As the region is known for it's star gazing, we were hoping that the clouds would clear enough for a few stars to peer through. Luckily the whole sky cleared & we had front row seats for a delight of an astronomic level!
