Having picked up our lovely "rent-a-dent" Nissan Pulsar the day before we headed off early from Havelock North in order to catch the afternoon ferry from Wellington at the southern end of the north island. Arriving just in time after a 4 hour drive (including a pie stop of course) we got our tickets and to our delight, got $60 off for being students. The pies in New Zealand are plentiful and our pies of choice are steak and pepper and apple turnover (yes, we know that's not a pie).
The Santa Regina ferry took us across the seas at 1pm sharp and arrive in Picton at 4:15pm. The ride was active with spectacular views of random islets and crashing waves. Having arrived in Picton, the main passenger port in the South Island we promptly drove off in search of fuel, dinner and a place to sleep.
After stopping at countdown ("you can count on us to keep prices down") to pick up some supplies we settled on Dominos Pizza for dinner after finding a discount coupon on the back of our reciept. $7.99 for ANY large pizza! That's about TWO POUNDS FIFTY to you guys back home! How could we resist the hawiian temptation.
Having filled up on pizza, we drove south along the east coast to a rest stop just outside of Blemhiem to check into our luxury hotel - aka folded the back seats down in our car and got the sleeping bags and blankets out to keep warm on a Australasian winters night.
