Arriving in Queenstown early we thought we would check out the snow situation first hand and headed up Coronet Peak, one of the two snow fields in close proximity. As we arrived we noticed the snow was shiny thus suggesting ice - not something wanted by a beginner snowboarder.
At the start of our trip we had decided that half way round we would spend a couple of nights in proper accommodation to have a break from life in the car. We Headed into town and checked out a few backpackers before settling on a nice motel that offered a bed, bathroom and KITCHEN all for the same price as a hostel room. Queenstown started as an alpine resort but has since developed into the "Adrenaline Capital of the World" due in part to Mr AJ Hacket who developed the first commercial bungee jump here in the 1980's. Since then all sorts of wonderfull thrill seeking possibilities have sprung up and we were keen to get out hearts racing.
As I (Pez) had only ever been Skiing I really wanted to have a go at snowboarding and Maz was happy to teach me. As my birthday was coming up we decided on celebrating it the next day with many fun activities. We hired snowboards and clothing, bought day passes for the next day and were all set. Then Maz booked us into a private Hot pool in order to soak our aches and pains that were almost definitely inevitable.
Having sorted all that and got a bit of food shopping it was really nice to cook a proper meal of Sweet and Sour Chicken as living in a car gave us limited cuisine. We then got an early night as we'd need our rest for the next days activities!
