Waking up early we wanted to get on the slopes of the Remarkables by opening at 9am. It was a 45 minute drive up a steep and windy road that recommended snow chains (unfortunately we wouldn't even no how to fit then if we had them - don't tell rent-a-dent :). We put our stuff on and headed to the beginner slope via the magic carpet for a crash course in snow boarding.
The first hurdle was getting up but once we were off Maz seemed to get up to speed with where she had left off pretty quickly and I (Pez) seemed to get the hang of it after about half an hour. Maybe all that skateboarding at Woodward helped?
The next hurdle was the lifts. I had found getting off the lifts pretty easy when I had skied in the past but with a snow board you have to have one foot clamped in (front foot) and one foot unattached and then sort of jump off the lift in the hope of landing without twisting an ankle. Sure enough both of us fell the first time but due to no serious sprains we had a chance to got down one of the green runs.
We went slowly and fell over a lot but by the time we reached the bottom we were all set to tackle it again. Over the day we got better at not falling over and even getting some speed up. A lot of the more advanced runs were closed due to wind but we probably would have stayed on the green runs anyway. Besides a quick pack lunch break we got as much snow time as possible until 4pm and the experience was totally worth it as it cost the same as a 5 minute bungee jump!!!
After driving back to our Motel we cooked a lovely Thai curry and enjoyed some hot Gluvine to warm up. We then got a free shuttle bus to the hot pools. All made out of wood (like a barrel cut in half) the hot pool had jets, adjustable temperature and a wall a ceiling that folded away so we could look out upon the stars and remarkable mountain ranges. truly a great way to easy our bruised bones.
Later that evening we had booked to go to Minus 5, a local bar that served cocktails in a refrigerated room with all furniture + bar made out of ice. they even had many ice sculptures on display.
We had a fantastic day and it was a lovely way to celebrate Pez turning a quarter of a century old!!!
