hola amigos!
i am writing this blog after a very eventfull day tour from tupiza to uyuni crossing various amounts of lakes, volcanos, mountains and salt flats with a lama mad guide (who this time was luckily older than 8!) who taught us many random and weird dance moves allong the way.
on day one we had a very emotional departure from our hostal (my hospital) for 4 days and not forgetting my nurse who was sad to see us leave! we had booked onto a tour for 4 people with two other girls one from ireland and one from england! on this day we went higher and higher (not good for the altitude sickness) we saw lots of amazing scenery and weird shaped mountains. also on this day we told the girls on our tour the biggest most regretable lie that would come back to haunt us later on in the trip. we told these girls that we where 21 and had been to uni, we have started doing this because anyone we tell we are 18 they immediately want to take us under there wing and treat us like little boys that have ventured out of there house for the first time on there own. the girls on our tour started asking us questionssuch as what uni we went to and what course we where doin. for some reason max told them he was doing sports science and when they asked him what job he was going to go into after and he told them he was going to be a gym instructer(after all that scientific studies he had been doing)
also on the first day our jeep was approached by a woman dressed in traditional bolivian clothes who came out of the middle of nowhere to sell us hats and allsorts. after feeling the cold we both decided to buy a nice wooley hat made out of lama wool! (which was a good investment toward the end they may look silly but they where very practical!!!honest)
on the second day we where rudely awoken by our guide at 5 30 in the morning to have some breakfast made by our cook that we had in our jeep the whole way. surprisingly none of us where up for eating much. we set off after breakfast and after about an hour of driving past flamingos and lamas we arrived at reserva nacional de fauna andina eduardo avaroa here is where our big lie was unveiled as what it truly was. we had to sign a sheet declaring our name our passport number and unfortanately our AGEE! so we both wrote down our true age (not wanting to lie to the police) both the girls did the same and both saw our true age but they did not say anything until the last night so this led to some very very very awkward times in the jeep!
just after our night mare park entry we arrived at big lake and at the foot of this lake was a small hot spring with plenty of people swimming in! we all climbed in and spent a good 50 minutes in there. it was nice considering we hadnt showerd for 2 days! after our highest bath ever(4300 meter high to be exact) we had lunch which again i couldnt eat so i painfully had to leave it and just eat a couple of peaches while watching max tuck into some nice looking steak in a curry sauce! after this we went to a place called laguna verde which was a bright blue lake but you couldnt swim in it because it was toxic (which is pointlesss really) this lake is currently up for voting for one of the new natural wonders of the world. on this night we slept in a slightly nicer hostel but that did not mean a better sleep with the irish girl snoring like a hogg to say the least all night (which involved max and i couching as loud as we coulkd to try and wake her up so we could have a head start in getting to sleep.
the third day started with anouther early start at about 6 30 and we set off into the wilderness at 8 after pancakes for breakfast. on the thrid day we went past more and more lakes jkust really to get us to our final goal of salar de uyuni. so we arrived at out next hostal (which was made out of salt) and i fianly started to get my appitite back manageing to eat a plate of spagetti bolognese. that night we where left confused when our guide (who had limited english) taught us one of his favorite card games.
on the next day we woke up at 4 30 so we could see sunset! so we set off at 5 30 and made it to the salt flats for the sunrise! then we drove to a random island in te middle of the salt flats with allot of cactus on it! here we had breakfast but we where all again too tired to eat! from here we went to the hotel de sal which was a hotel made entirely out of salt. here we parked up for a while and we took some photos of us all on the salt flats forming visual illusions includng max eating my head and me flicking a pocket size max. (all will be explained in the pictures)
after we arrived in uyuni and checked into a hostel costing 3 pounds a night(30 belivianos) and now we are currently waiting for our bus to the highest city in the world called potosi! all will be told in the next blog!
hope all is well
