February - back to school!
In February we were due to start back at schgool, but things did not go quite to plan for us. Basically, although we had been promised a new school building for the start of the new term - unsurprisingly, it had not materialised. It was so decided that we could no longer continue working at Kitega Pride School in its current form - especially with the coming rainy season! This almost ended up in us moving away from Kitega - which I was very unhappy about - but eventually we decided there were other schols we could help in here.
As of the beginning of February we have been teaching at Kaowlo c/u Primary School. This school has a horse shoe shaped building made up of basic classrooms. It is by the road and has a lot fo grass in front of it and a mango tree which we sit under at lunch. At this school, I am teaching maths and science to p5 and p6 as well as PE to p3 and p4. It is a government funded school and is very large. Our p6 class had around 40 children and p5 around 60 (although this is nothing comapred to the classes of 140 some volunteers teach.) The other teachers at the school are all very friendly . They still cannot understand why we do not have sugarcane or matoke at home though! We now get served posho and beans for lunch everyday which is a bonus!! This meal, which I used to find disgusting, I now look forward to at lunch everyday! mmmmm! The children are all very funny and we are beginning to learn the names and characters. Justine and I's favourtie child is a p1 called "wellies" because of the fact she always wears little red wellies to school everyday along with her purple dress!!! Everyday she strolls fearlessly to the front of the porridge queue to collect her lunch - no waiting around for her!!! The children also have an interesting assortment of clothes - including a 12 year old wearing a 5 year old's dressing gown, boys wearing tight white and pink girls jackets with furry hoods and boys and girls alike wearing clothes with cpations like "babe on wheels!'
So, all in all the new school is going very well for us. The month of February also held an important event for Uganda- the Presidential elections. For most of the time we have been in Uganda campaigning has been taking place. This means that buildings are plastered in posters depicting various candidates abd that trucks drive arounf the country blaring out popular Ugandan songs, while a man talks through a megaphone about why you should vote for whatever candidatte. We also experienced several campaigning parties. Once when in Lugazi, we accidently walked out of a shop into campaigning for the "green" party. This involved a load of guys on boda bodas with big pieces of tree sticking out of them, shouting, blowing whistles and backfiring their engines! A little intimidating. Unsurprisingly, on the 21st of March it was announced that Yoweri. K. Museveni had been reelceted the President of Uganda for the 26th year! A long time. I'm sure this had a lot to do with the release oft he hit song "Do you want another rap?" released under his rapper name "sevo." I'm sure a similar release by "Camo" would go down very well.....
