Week 4 and 5
Insane to think that I have been in this crazy county for a month now. Time really is flyyying. The last 2 weeks have been fairly uneventful. On last Sunday, Justine and I decided to venture into Kampala - our first time on a a taxi alone. This was because our phones, that had been away for 2 weeks, still hadn't been unlocked. And we'd lost 10,000Ush in the process. We stood by the road side until a taxi pulled up. Now when I say taxi, what I realy mean is minibus. When we looked inside it seemed physically impossible that we would fit inside as well- but nonethless we piled in with about a million other sweaty Ugandans. Tasty. Needless to say it wasn't the most comfortable ride, but we managed to arrive in one piece. Even if we were dropped off totally in the wrong place. In Kampala we experienced typical "mzungu" syndrome - meaning when people see us prices magically increase about tenfold. This time, it meant that the phone man decided to try and charge us 80,000Ush for our phones, when we'd been told it should be max 10,000. This was an absoloute joke and there was not a chance I was paying that, We managed to get our phones in our hands and then just put 10,000 down and walked out. Good job. Pretty glad we didn't get scammed. After another fun 2 hour taxi drive we arrived safely back in Kitega. For some reason here 2 hours travelling seems like nothing, when in Britain there is no chance I'd travel that far just for my phone!!
On the 5th week a new teacher called Fred decided to rock up at the school. We have no ida where he came from - but he has a hilariously high pitched voice. He sounds like a teenage girl. Fred then proceeded to spend the whole day (8 hours) making a new timetable that was worst than the previous one. Oh dear...Pretty annoying considering we'd just settled into our own timetable..but what can you do...
Rats - I'm sure me and Justine must just attract bad luck because it just keeps coming for us. After a really good day we were happy and had just got some photos printed out to send home..but oh no....it just had to be ruined. We then spent the night sharing our beds with rats. Now I'm all for sharing stuff with others, but I draw the line at allowing rodents into my sleeping space. For the whole night I cowered in the middle of my bed in a ball so that I wasn't touching the mosquito net. The rats were on my mattress, on top of the net, at my head, feet and on both sides. Absolutely horrible, and it didn't make me feel any better when i woke up to see they had chewed a massive hole in my net. Ew. These rats are pretty much spidy - rats. My bed is at the top of a triple bunk bed so they have pretty good climbing powers. They can run along the walls and everything and enter through a hole in the roof. Bad times. Justine also saw one running along her headboard!I don't think I've ever wanted to die quite so much in my life. I contemplated just going and standing outside for the next 4 hours. Except that would have involved me climbing down via the middle bunk which the rats were occupying. For the next few nights I slept under 2 mosquito nets and we put down some poison which we though had done the trick. But not so....when we returned from our weekend away there were a pair of them making home BETWEEN my two mattresses and when i saw them I wanted to cry. Luckily Benny and Finn were with us so they tried to catch them, while stereotpically me and Justine ran out the room and stood on our stools. hahaha. And they'd chewed though both my nets. Oh, yes and I nearly forgot to mention they have chewed the sleeve off my t shirt. What a joke!!!
