Weekend Fun
I haven't written this for ages, been verrry busy! Our weekdays have been pretty much the same as ever - but our weekends have been pretty hectic over the past few weeks! Our first thing was that our friend Blair came to visit (his partner Gregg had decided to go to the other side of the country - he apparantly couldn't deal with spending a weekend with 3 Scottish people!) We didn't do much for the whole weekend but it was good to be able to have someone to stay and show them around the village. Over the weekend Blair also perfected his omelette making skills to pretty tasty results! Our main entertainment was watching Blair, who is about 6million feet tall, get into the top deck of our triple bunk bed. Once in there he also had to sleep in a triangle shape because he was way too long for it!! Every time he moved as well I was slightly concerned he might come through the bed and early in the morning we experienced an earthquake when he practically tumbled out of bed because his host, brother John, had phoned to "greet him."
The next weekend after this we visited some other friends - Becky and Naomi - who live in Mubende. This was our first trip West of Kampala and it was a pretty interesting journey too! The taxi left from the "New" taxi Park, which you would assume would be an upgrade from the "old" taxi park that we usually travel from. But no no no. It was awful. Pretty surprised we made it out alive. There were literally Ugandan men wrestling each other over whose taxi we were going to get into - I was just waiting for the fists to start flying. When we had finally assertained where we were going and who with we then had to wait for 1 hour in a very cramped and ROASTING hot taxi. I thought I was going to die. The experience was made all the more enjoyable by the fact that we were constantly being harassed by people trrying to sell us a whole range of goods. The highlight was when a man tried to offer me an electric shaver wehile miming shaving off my beard. What the hell. When we eventually left, for half of the journey we couldn't really see or breathe because there was so much dust as they were resurfacing the road. This also meant that I felt a bit like I'd walked into mario kart as we were constantly swerving from one side of the road to the other and taking massive diversions off the road altogether. At one point I thought we were destined to drive into a swamp!!
When eventually we arrived we were amazed by what we saw. Becky and Naomi's project is a million miles from ours. Where we have no building they have brand new huge classrooms and massive grounds. While we have no other teachers they have a huge teaching staff and a pretty nice staffroom. So a bit of a contrast really. We had a really good time over the weekend though. When we arrived on the Friday they were having a football and netball match with another local school. Then on Saturday there was a talent show, which was pretty enteratining. There was a lot of genuine talent on show. Ha. The main acts were dancing, miming and "fashion." They loved nothing more than dragging up mzungus from the audience to join their acts. Later on the school also held a dance for their senior children. I stayed pretty clear of it after being warned the children loved to dance "close close."
Staying at Becky and Naomi's house was a bit of a novelty - they have a TOILET!!!! We were also cooked food by their Ugandan family which was pretty tasty although bizarelly Ugandan's have a habit of eating and staying up very lat - so it didn't arrive until 11pm. This is pretty funny considering me and Justine are normally well in bed by this time....
