Lwakhakha
So on the next free weekend we had, we decided to visit our friends Benny and Finn in Lwakhakha (silent L.) This is a town which borders Kenya, which meant we were able to take a quick stroll over the border just to buy some paraffin as it is apparantly cheaper there - althoguh probably only buy about 10p but y'know every little helps...On ther border there was one of the most disgusting sites I have ever seen. There is a massive tree that is literally covered in bats. Not only are they hanging in their thousands off of the tree taking a nap but they are also flying around in the sky. Hundreds and hundreds of them. To make this even moreenjoyable some crazy Ugandans were trying to shoot them with caapults, so the ground also had a bit of a carpeting of dead bats and we nearly got hit by a wayward stone. Fun times.
On Sunday we decided to go fo a walk up a big hill thing which you can see from Lwakhakha. And when I say big it was pretty damn big. It was roasting hot as we climbed and I felt slightly as if I was about to die - but once we got to the top it was well worth it. At about 5 o 'clock we found a patch of flat grass which was good for us to camp on and the view from the spot was absoloutly spectacular. You could see for literally hundreds of miles off in every direction - off into the distance of Kenya and the Rift Valley and through the rolling hills of uganda. Just to add to the fun, right as we began to pitch our tents it started to POUR with rain. Ugandan style. We got absolo9utly drenched within about 20 seconds. This clearly delighted the gaggle of children who had swarmed around to watch the crazy Mzungus with their houses which popped up out of a bag!! We did manage to cook a pretty successful dinner of fried potato and tomato sauce tohugh over a fire which was made from half of a tree and a houise which was pretty much torn down when we asked if there was any firewood... Oh dear!!
The next morning I was awoken at half 5 by an old woman walking past the tent singing away happily to herself. She then asked called out "sisters, sisters." When we didn't reply she concluded that "they ar not around." Clearly it didn't occur to her that at that time in the morning, when it was still pitch black, we might just still be sleeping!!
