We are now in Alice, a few days in and already a lot has been seen.
From Barkley homestead we travelled towards Tennant Creek then down to the Devils marbles, a crazy rock formation in the middle of nowhere. Then down to Whycliffe wells, where they grew all the veges for the troops WWII, the closest location with good soil to Darwin. It is also the UFO capital of Australia.
Then it being Father's Day we wanted dad to have reception, so he could see a football match. The only place was Barrow creek, a place you would normally run from......... It really was something we will never forget, it was dirty, dusty, there was no love here. Even after seeing the bathroom, I thought I will not be showering here. I did a tour of the place taking photos, really just to prove our visions.
We were glad to be off in the morning and on to Alice, with a quick stop at ARB on the way to our "bushcamp" 15 k's out of Alice.
The next day included a walk out at Serpentine Gorge. Spencer said "Kenneth would love it here" ...... We thought that is lovely, he is talking about the serenity or something ...... No " it's because it's all Souths colours, red and green" it was beautiful, then on to Standleys chasm and then to Simpsons gap to cap off the first day of the West Macdonnell ranges.
Next day Orminston gorge which was spectacular, we did the rim walk, 7.6 k's . The lookout was a highlight, even though my vertigo got the better of me.Then down through the valley and into the gorge, with a water crossing at the end. Jonah said " it was one of the best".
Next day off to Palm Valley, starting off with a fabulous lookout, magic views. Then off on a real 4 wheel drive with river crossings. We decided to leave the car at Cycad gorge and walk the rest of the way in. Great little walk up the riverbed then up onto ledge looking down onto the valley below.
On the way home we stopped in at Albert Namatjiras birthplace, near Hermannsberg( German Lutheran mission).
Next off to Kings canyon, we took the gravel loop road out from Orminston gorge, it was a very scenic way to get out there.
The walk was incredible ,straight up to the rim, incredible rock formations, 400 year old cycads and unbelievable drops.
