We left the hostel at 5.30am (Dad you would have been proud of us!) to catch sunrise and to get to Yellowstone before the crowds, as we were about a 1.5hr drive from Yellowstone, having to drive through Teton National Park to get there.
Yellowstone is known for it's thermal pools and geyers. We followed the figure of eight route, to make sure we didn't miss anything! We first stopped at a thermal park to see crystal clear steaming pools and then headed straight to Old Faithful. We walked around the park, seeing many steaming and bubbling pools and active geysers and took a seat to view Old Faithful, just as she began to erupt! The water spurted over 100 feet at one point and lasted for around 5 minutes. Old Faithful erupts, on average, every 90 minutes - hence the name! We then continued on the loop stopping to see Bison along the way. We stopped off at the Midway Springs, to see the famous colours of the Prismatic Spring. The turquoise pools were surrounded by rings of orange, yellow and brown which look spectacular. At the top of the figure of eight trail we stopped at the Mammouth Hot Springs to see the terraces formed from Silica. The terraces cascaded hot water from the top down into bright white terraced pools. We headed back towards Jackson and on the long drive we saw hundreds of Bison grazing by the Yellowstone River banks - and even strolling along the road! After over 12 hours of driving we'd had enough and had a quick dinner then headed straight to bed!
