Last weekend I went to a wedding with my dear friend Wayne. I've know Wayne for 5 years now, and I always seem to be in South Africa around his birthday. (I have photos from Wayne's birthday this year, but I have yet to upload them. Sorry Wayne, I will get to them.) Anyway, back to last weekend- Wayne's 2 friends, Reza and Eldon, were married in Paarl. I met Reza and Eldon at each birthday party, so I wasn't a TOTAL stranger, and I was welcomed as a longtime friend, which is typical in South Africa if you've met someone at least once.
I packed a bag and headed to Paarl for the weekend. The wedding was on Saturday at a small church in Paarl and the reception was at a local wine farm. (I cannot remember the name of the farm right now.) The wedding was beautiful- we danced, ate, drank, went to the after party, and celebrated through the night. It turns out that Reza's father is the outgoing Dean of the Arts Faculty [college] at UWC, so he was excited to give me some ideas about my work at UWC. (It seems that UWC is everywhere!) On Sunday, Wayne and I went to a few wineries for lunch and a little wine tasting.
We started off at Fairview for wine and cheese tasting. I saw Fairview in the Paarl tourist pamphlets, so I knew the name. Fairview is known for the cheese tastings and the goat tower (see photo album). They had a wedding onsite for a biker couple so there were rows of Harleys with wedding ribbons on them. (I caught a few guests checking out the goat tower as well.)
On the tasting menu at Fairview were names such as "Goats do Roam," "Bored Doe," "The Goatfather…Don Goatti's personal selection," and "Goat-Roti." I thought my wine connoisseur friends would enjoy that. We intended to dine at the restaurant in Fairview, but we could not get a table without a reservation, so we went to Laborie, another wine farm.
Wayne used to work at Laborie, so I visited once before for an outdoor concert (4 years ago). This time we were there for a little wine and lunch. There was a tour bus that arrived without advanced notice, so their restaurant was also overbooked, so we walked the grounds until our table was ready. I hope you enjoy the photos.
I hope you are well and I will be in touch,
Christy
