On September 24, Heritage Day, I left for Durban for 2 student affairs conferences. It's always nice to get out of town and away from the residences, but I was also VERY excited to see another familiar face, and friend. I stayed at a Bed and Breakfast for my first conference (South African Association for Senior Student Affairs Professionals- SAASSAP), which was held at the University of KwaZulu Natal. I had never attended the SAASSAP conference, so it was nice to meet some new people and they had some nice outings and events during the conference, which I'll write about later.
The second conference was at a hotel on the beach. My friend Tosh, who was studying student affairs and working in Residence Life at Michigan State during my time there, was working on the Semester at Sea program. She was invited to the conference to do some workshops/presentations when the ship docked in Cape Town, so we planned to meet up in Durban. I was very excited to meet up with her.
Our student affairs colleagues organized a trip to the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve the Sunday before the conference started, so our friend Doc and his wife Precious picked us up at 4:30am and we headed about 2.5 hours north to Hluhluwe (I read somewhere that if you pronounce it as "shoushlooee" it's close enough. My mom was trying to pronounce it the other day.) Between the 2 of us, Tosh and I had a lot of photos, so I tried to pick those that reflected our day. It's so strange to see the animals in their natural habitat- those who grew up in Southern California with Lion Country Safari, take that and multiply it by….I don't even know the number. It is one of the largest (and I believe oldest) game reserves in South Africa. I wanted you to be able to see more beautiful landscape of South Africa so I included some photos of just about everything. We saw a lot of giraffe, rhino, antelope, wildebeest, and warthogs. I'm still on the lookout for a lion and hippo. My parents are coming out the end of my stay and we're going back to this area for a few days; perhaps I will be able to see some of the harder-to-spot animals then.
I hope you enjoy the photos!
Keep Well,
Christy
