I found a new hangout on campus- a restaurant and bar called "African Routes." Many of you have heard me talk (complain, rather) about how little there is to do living at UWC without a car. There is The Barn, a bar (-turned dance club Friday and Saturday nights), but I cannot (or should not) go there as a staff member. This year I discovered a spot in the stadium that they renovated since I was last here, and is used at times to host special events on campus. It turns out that I used to work on a committee last time I was here with the person who now runs African Routes (Kurt), so he is great company when I go there just to get out of my residence.
Kurt is trying to bring some tourism training to the venue and create opportunities for students to get into the wine industry. His plan is to start doing some wine tastings and special events at this location. I, of course, am gladly volunteering to be the guinea pig and sample the first of the wines! Anything to help out.
Last Friday night I asked my Theology Residence comrades to take a break from studying and join me for dinner and a night out. (I was not being a bad influence. My friend Rhoda said they all needed to get out and take a break, so I simply offered a suggestion J). It was so nice to get out with a group of people, away from our lounge in our residence.
You will see some familiar faces in the photo album- Therese and Kim from Sweden, and Smokey, Kim's South African boyfriend, went to Hermanus with me months ago. Rhoda is my friend from Bio Boot Camp. The new faces are the gentlemen from the Human Rights Law program- Hillary from Nigeria, Jaffet from Kenya, Remember from The Republic of the Sudan, and Mesenbet from Ethiopia. My friend Sam, from Ghana, also met up with us that evening.
I'm sure there will be more to come from African Routes and my fellow Theology Residents.
Cheers,
Christy
