Hello to you all. I have finally decided to start a blog about my travels and experiences in South Africa. My students would say, "Welcome to the 21st century, FINALLY." If nothing else, creating this blog will help me learn things about technology that may be helpful in my work. I'll let you know how it goes.
I'm actually really quite excited about "blogging". Those who know me well, know that I love stories. I love reading stories, listening to stories, and yes, telling stories as well. I'm so used to picking up the phone and talking to my friends about daily thoughts and events. Sometimes I'd bother them while they were at work. I used to call while driving in traffic on the way to or from work. I'd call when I heard or saw something that I thought they'd enjoy, something that made me laugh, something that really made me think, something that reminded me of them; sometimes I'd call quite a bit. Most often I try to be polite and ask them if they have time for a quick story. Other times, I just blurt out, "You have to listen to this, it'll be fast." You get the point.
In South Africa, calling is very expensive. Sometimes people will call you, say what they have to say very fast, and then just hang up without giving you time for a response. When I first came here, all I would receive are these text messages with 8 characters that made up some coded sentence, or a line that read, "Please call." I later found out that the 1st 8 characters in an SMS are free, it is free to send the "Please call" line, and that incoming calls are also free. I was the sucker who would burn through all my airtime quickly and have to go back to the tuck shop for more airtime. Needless to say, I need another avenue to share my thoughts and experiences. I've been here 2 months now, so I can't promise any sequence of events; I'll write as I go. Those of you who have emailed to see if I have any new stories, I'll try my best to write a couple times a week. I miss you all and look forward to hearing from you.
I'm trying to find a fast website that shares photos and slide shows. If you know of a good site, please let me know. For now, I will change up the photos as I go so you can see the beautiful scenery of South Africa. Last weekend I went to Cape Point with some of my new colleagues visiting from CSU, Fullerton. The first set of photos is from my most recent outing.
I hope you enjoy.
